  • Energy Monitoring des Kunstkanals

As every year, we and all those working at the kunstkanal take part at the Q202 art walk in the second district in vienna. From April 24th to 26th (2pm to 9pm) there will be coffee, cake and beer as well as an insight into artistic works, innovative and traditional products from various areas - from media installations, readings and performance to shoe making and basket weaving ... and of course you can take a look in all of our rooms and workplaces.

The energy consumption of the 650 m2 area of the Kunstkanal with all its offices, studios, workshops and communal areas is relatively high and difficult to calculate and bill. Since 2013 we have 8 out of 15 electricity meters. The open source smart meter volkszaehler.org collects the consumption data and visualizes it via a web frontend. In this way, it is possible to forecast an almost transparent, exact calculation of additional costs for the individual rooms and to identify power guzzlers.

The pedal-operated media installation Watt? visualizes the power consumption of seven rooms in the Kunstkanal in real time and shows the power generated by pedal force. The representation of the measured data in the form of sine curves on the LED curtain with 3072 LEDs is an artistic approximation. The power consumed is shown in 100 watt steps. If you step on the pedals, the current curves light up brighter, the power currently being produced is displayed in the middle, which fluctuates between 0 and 120 watts. The duration of the electricity production is illustrated with a slowly growing white line, which slowly overdraws the electricity curves and after some time only shows the specifically produced power.
