LeveL

LeveL is an interactive illuminated Mobile sculpture. It was exhibited at the London Design Biennale 2016 at Somerset House.

"A reflection on the fragile balance of utopia, mischer'traxler's kinetic light sculpture, LeveL, is poised to unsteady itself at the slightest movement. When the mobile is perfectly still, the lights are at their brightest, illuminating the room fully. As you enter and move around the space, your breath and the drafts of air you create make the rods tilt and the LEDs dim, setting the mobile out of balance. The delicate and ever-changing sculpture reflects on the precariousness of the utopian ideal, and its potential to unravel when subjected to the reality of everyday life."

mischer'traxler Studio asked us to develop the electronics and control-firmware for this interactive LED installation. Each illuminated end contains a circuit board with 6 high-power LEDs, an accelerometer and a microcontroller. The accelerometers are capable of sensing the smallest movements or bumps so the microcontroller can act accordingly. The boards do not communicate with each other electrically, instead all bumps and movements are passed on mechanically through the structure itself.

To allow testing and on-site calibration of all boards at once we developed a method for safely updating the firmware using only the two power cables.

Working on yet another project with mischer'traxler was a great experience for us. They are excellent designers and we always enjoy working with Katarina, Thomas and their team.

Solar power plant controller

Together with Swimsol we developed a high-resolution realtime monitoring system for solar power plants. The system can be used with large scale three-phase inverters, in small DC island systems and anything inbetween. The software is platform independent and runs on a wide range of embedded deivces and Desktop systems. It is also capable of intelligently controlling battery inverters/chargers to provide peak-shaving or provide information to Diesel gensets.

DKIA performed the software development and helped setting up a prototype on an island in the Maldives.

If you are interested in this system or solar power in general, please contact our partner Swimsol GmbH.

Curiosity cloud

'Curiosity cloud’ celebrates a moment in nature and plays on the interaction between humans and the natural world.

Commissioned by Perrier-Jouët, the project was first presented in the Victoria and Albert Museum during London Design Festival 2015.

DKIA was contracted to design the electronics and program the pieces according to the specifications given by mischer'traxler. Simon Laburda/DKIA was also on site at London Design Festival to help set the system up.

FLiP countdown

Thanks to our previous know-how in designing countdown-clocks ;) we were asked by BOA to build them another one. This clock is currently shown at the Financial Life Park near Vienna main railway station (Hauptbahnhof). If you want to see it you have to be quick though, the countdown ends on the 28th of October.

The clock is based on a Teensy 2.0 and a realtime-clock module. The LEDs themself are WS2812 (aka. Neopixel) LED-stripes arranged in 7-segment displays. This allows for a full range of colors and simplifies wiring a lot.

Voting Modules

We developed for the project "Bank für Gemeinwohl" seven interactive voting modules. By touching the logo on the outside of the window pane the counter number moves up. For the detection of the contact, a metal foil was placed behind the window pane and is connected to an IO pin of an arduinos.

The Arduino continuously measures the capacity when a finger is placed, the capacity increases rapidly and is used as a trigger.

Voting Module

EuRegio Barrierefrei

We developed with the Lebenshilfe Salzburg gGmbH and Chiemgau Lebenshilfe-Werkstätten GmbH - supported by the EuRegio projects fund - an exciting project between January 2014 and March 2015.

The aim was to create a Web page, which offers barrier-free excursions and holiday packages. The project examined experts in their own right destinations, leisure facilities, restaurants, hotels etc. in the region Salzburg - Berchtesgaden - Traunstein on their accessibility for people with different impairments. The results were transferred to the website www.euregio-barrierefrei.eu and went life in April 2015. The tests are further carried out after the project ends, so that the size of the database is constantly rising.

The website www.euregio-barrierefrei.eu aimed at people in the area of Salzburg - Berchtesgadener Land - Traunstein who are planning a holiday, as well as to inhabitants in the region.

Ephemerā

The project 'ephemerā' represents the dialogue between mankind and nature through three interactive kinetic furniture pieces - a big oak table and two mirrors. ... Observed from a distance the pieces' floral decoration appears alive. The plants grow and move, following their own gentle choreography. However, when someone comes close, the plants and insects disappear. ... The project was first presented at Design Miami 2014.

 - Source: mischertaxler.com

More information on the project is available from the designstudio mischer'traxler and Perrier Jouet

DKIA was contracted to design the electronics and program the pieces according to the specifications given by mischer'traxler. A lot of effort went into developing a mechanism which allowed the sheet metal "plants" to move in near silence. The mechanics were developed by mischer'traxler and Martin Robitsch. Together we managed to accomplish this goal.

Simon Laburda/DKIA was also on site at Design Miami to help set the system up.

The table is based on an Arduino Uno which interfaces with 37 motor controllers for all the moving elements and 14 ultrasonic sensors to detect people approaching.
The mirrors combine plants displayed on a large screen, together with parts which extend beyond the screen and consist of sheet metal. They are controlled by Raspberry Pis
